The lower "L-shape" bent hook (referred to as a Shepards hook) the thread guide helps keep the proper tension along the thread path after the thread exits the tensioner and travels to the pick-up lever. It allows the pick-up lever to properly form each stitch by drawing up the top thread uniformly.
This part fits all generation models.
